This book just wasn't for me. The perfect daughter of a narcissist matriarch married to the perfect husband, has an affair with an artist. The intimate scenes between them were like old "art movies", unappealing to me. Every other page the main character was lying in the artist's bed having deep thoughts. I didn't like reading about self-absorbed people who thought they knew how to live the perfect life following the rules of their social class. I bought it because one of my favorite authors said it was her favorite book. Mistake.

Family Happiness Laurie Colwin 9780060958978 Books Reviews

This book is such a good read. Ms. Colwin's language is so evocative and flawless and a pleasure to read. And her characters are so alive and sympathetic. I savor every word.
Colwin is a masterful writer. The first chapter is a great set up, in the style of George Eliot, introducing a storied family and the place of the main character Polly in it. It is a great example of how enjoyable an authoritative introduction can be.

Problems
It is grating how anything interesting or "different" is a Japanese artist, a Japanese print, a Japanese cup and saucer. This was so 1980s.

Well to do woman largely stays in her comfort zone, ponders, to be or not to be in a love affair. Who cares? If she had a real job, with real stakes, took a real stance, she would not be so wishy washy, so wistful when with her family or her lover. In the 1980s, there *were* women who achieved stuff. This Polly character essentially chose to have a boring, safe life.

Very repetitive, each character essentially staying in its preset settings, not changing much throughout the story. They are tiresome. More caricatures than real people.

Even the artist lover is well to do and leisurely. Come on! Real working artists in cut throat New York are from outside of New York, desperate, competitive, hungry, jealous. Very unrealistic.

I could see Colwin is a great writer, and look forward to reading her write about a different subject.
This is one of the most boring books I've ever tried to read. I'm almost a quarter of the way through and virtually nothing has happened. Won't be finishing.
As a first time reader of this author I am very moved by the theme. A life unexamined turns painful and therefore interesting. This way of life is so foreign to my experience that I did a lot of reflecting which I enjoy greatly. I will recommmend!
In Colwin's novels the sensory details are just as important as the plot to the benefit of both. I related to the protagonist less than in some of her other novels (who is as perfect as Polly?) but the struggles are nonetheless real and her writing is gorgeous as ever.
Complex characters looking for easy in today's complex world. Some people don't know when they have it good or can only see the grass greener on the other side. They are fun to visit put I was happy to leave them when the book ended.
This question is asked quite a bit in this book. I read this because it was rated one of the best books in a newspaper article that I read. Well, I do not agree with that but I did enjoy the book. If you want to ponder fidelity this is the book for you. I did like how the wife "found herself" and stood up for herself as time went on.
