This book is a romance novel but, as another reviewer said, it is so much more. Annie Gerhard is a single mother with an alcoholic ex-husband, a dysfunctional birth-family and a very difficult job in Silicone Valley. Annie holds life together by taking care of everyone and everything without a thought for herself and her own needs and wants. When the economy takes a downturn and Annie is told that she will be laid off if she doesn't uproot herself and her son and move to New Jersey, she faces a life-changing crisis. With the help of a life coach (therapist), a massage therapist, a best friend, an aunt that she never knew and a new love, Annie takes charge of her own life. I truly enjoyed this book and its descriptions of the California Coast that I know and love and the details of Annie's life both past and present, some of which I could honestly identify with.

I believe that this is Ms. Dawes' first book and, in my opinion, it is excellent. Her characters are believable, likable, easy to identify with and her story unfolds smoothly. I read the book in a little more than one day and couldn't put it down. I have ordered her next book, California Wine for my Kindle and look forward to many more books from this gifted author.

Good story line ....life has away with your life and influences you and the decisions we make in our lives
Been reading some heavy mysteries and some violent stuff, and wanted a change. This was just fine. A nice easy read, a pretty good story line, and no shooting and killing. It was just what I was looking for. I got what I expected and was enjoying the book.
I bought this book, knowing it was a silly romance, so I didn't expect it to have a whole lot of depth, and it doesn't. It's okay for some boring winter nights, but very predictable and just keeps repeating itself. I was screaming to myself, get on with it already. If you are looking for something to just pass time, it's ok.
I was bored at times by the lack of confidence of the main character. She seemed to think she had to move to have security of a job and health insurance. I guess it is a symbol of our country that adults are afraid to take a chance and stay locked in jobs they do not like just to keep their seniority and insurance.
I was proud that she finally made her choice.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book...thought I was in for a mindless summer read but found much more. There were characters with familiar concerns and issues (tough economy/financial stress, single parenting of a teenaged boy, unreliable ex-husband, tough career choices, etc.) that grabbed me and made me care about them.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to read a non-mindless romance novel...lots of real-life situations and lessons to be had here!
This book was a bit too "california" for me. it had a very touchy-feely and introspective feel. If you like that sort of thing then this is the book for you. Annie has to be the most dedicated employee ever, especially considering her interaction with her male coworkers. it seems that every male in her life is using her and she seems to go along with it. She lets everyone tell her what to do including a guy she just met. It is hard to belive it when she actually does stand up for herself.
Annie Gerhard will be laid off if she won't move from California to New Jersey. Her 15-y.o. son David is in trouble. Her ex isn't any better now than he was when they were married. It's not the time to meet a guy who wants to spend time with her.

But new bookstore owner John Johnson wants just that. He's left Montana and his memories of a deceased wife behind to run an independent bookstore in the California town where Annie lives. He's determined to push through Annie's barriers but he has baggage of his own.

Author Casey Dawes has created two sympathetic people who deserve to be happy but who can't quite find their ways there. She gives them room to find out how, with the help of a life coach for Annie, they can.
