Ten year old Charlie Bone discovers he has a unique talent - he can hear the thoughts of people in photographs. Charlie's Grandmother Bone and her sisters are delighted that Charlie has inherited powers, the gift runs in the family and his late father also was one of the "endowed". They insist that Charlie attend Bloor's Academy where he can further develop his powers. Charlie reluctantly goes and soon realizes there are odd things going on at Bloor's. Before he quite knows exactly what is going on, Charlie is deep in a mystery involving a case with something mysterious inside it and a missing child and also discovers his father may not be dead after all.

"Midnight for Charlie Bone" was a good first book in what looks like a promising series. Comparisons with Harry Potter are inevitable but the book should be judged on it's own merit and it's not bad at all. Charlie is a strong character, a good friend to misfit Benjamin, and his struggles with his newly developed powers are very real. The other children in the book are well written, especially the delightful Olivia. The adults in the book are either just plain bad, or, with the exception of Charlie's Uncle Paton, good but ineffectual.

Even though the book is 400 pages long, parts of it felt rushed, especially the ending and the surrender of the bad guys. And, perhaps it's just me, but some of the happenings in the book seemed unexplained, like who initially opened the door and let Emma out of her "prison". Still, the book makes me want to continue reading the series, especially to see if the person I suspect is Charlie's father really is.

A good beginning.

Definitely a great read! This is my second time reading this series, and I am enjoying it as well as I did the first time I read it. I can't wait to read the second book!
I've read the whole series and I think each book gets more interesting. As I read thru each book the story keeps building, Charlie and his friends get deeper and deeper into trouble and their situations more dire. But the endings are horrible. It's like the author is tired of writing and just comes up with quick way to end the book. It's like she just pulls things out of thin air just to save the day or everything goes exactly as planned , and it all happens in a few paragraphs. What a let down!
That said I still enjoyed the books and would recommend them .I think they would be enjoyed even more by younger readers.
First Book in a great series for young and older readers. Well written - excellent descriptions, easy to visualize the story.
Super fun read! Definitely what I needed for a light summer read. If you're a fan of some magical adventures , Charlie Bone will take you there.
I am a slow reader, so I tend to read young adult series. This way when I get through one good book, I know the next several books won't be a waste of my time and effort. While this book has an identity of its own, I loved it for the same reasons I loved Harry Potter. It's full of magical children and strange happenings with likable characters. I am now on the third book of this series and it is still hard to put down.
This is my second time reading this series.
As you progress through the series, Nimmo really catches her stride, and her writing becomes more fluid and progresses more smoothly over the next couple of books in the series. This first one is a little more choppy. Overall, I really enjoy the story. Sure, some elements remind me of a certain other series written about a mistreated boy who goes off to magical boarding school, but there are plenty of original ideas throughout to separate the two. It's written simply enough that an elementary student can access it better, too.
The story gets better and better throughout the series - can't wait to get there! Again!
I don't think I'd recommend this as a substitute or alternative to the Harry Potter books, but instead as a primer for some younger teens who aren't quite ready for Potter's world. Thematically is runs along a similar course Boy who's lost his father in this case, comes to terms with the fact that he's has an extraordinary gift. Charlie is capable of looking at a photograph and hearing the voices within, and what was happening at the time the picture was taken. Soon his nasty Grandma Bone who is crafted from the same school of the Dursley's from Potter's world, ship him off to Bloor's Academy, a much less detailed and vague Hogwarts. A mystery is revealed that Charlie with his new friends must solve, while the various other characters align with either the good or the bad. Its charming, and engaging enough however simplistic much of the writing might be. Still for a younger teen there would be much to engross them, and with multiple subsequent books, the writing will hopefully mature along with Nimmo's protagonist.
