I am enjoying "The History of Persia" very much. For people who are interested in this book, I would suggest securing a detailed map of what was once Persia. Many things and places are mentioned in the history, that, without the map, would not make sense. I love the book for the writing style. It makes me want to back up and re-read quite often, but once I do it, and go to my map and even scriptures, it is very rewarding.Product details

A History of Persia Percy Molesworth Sykes 9781296793777 Books Reviews
Very in depth about everything about the Persian area. Environment, cultures, etc. Surprised someone took the time to write this a century ago. I appreciate it.
An amazingly thorough and detailed history of a fascinating region of our world. His research for this work is incredible.
A truly great book. The background on the early development of Islam is worth the read. A great aid to understanding what's going in the Middle East today.
It is a long read. Interesting, yes, but very long on contrnt. A true struggle with the names of persons, their titles, and the various names for the same places makes it a long-distance plod at times. The book is dated, but still very useful in learning the history of the entire area and allows an insight to how and why the land is in such turmoil today. Shia, Sunni, may never find peace, which reveals itself in this book.
This is a perfect primer for someone who has little knowledge of Persia at all. It does do a great service in acquainting the reader to the multiple forces at work in this region. If there is a quibble and it is a small one is that too much attention is placed on the Alexandian conquest which really changed Greece far greater than it did Persia. That said, I have lays wondered the true rationale as to why the Palavy Shah chose to change the country's name from Persia to Iran (we still speak of the Persian Gulf and the Fars predated everyone else). It also manages to explain stereotypes and modern perceptions without standing on a soap box, a scholarly work.
This book was written 100 years ago by a British soldier/politician stationed in that part of the British Empire. So the writing style of that era is a bit different from today's. I'm about 40% through the book and, although it's a struggle at times, I keep plugging away. This type of book is ideal for the reader as there are lots of names, places, and idioms which I have to look up on Wikipedia and Google Maps to understand. The first part of the book describes the geography of the area in excruciating detail. It gets better when the history starts. Characters and places such as Babylon, Parthia, Alexander the Great, Cyrus, Darius, Media, Roman Empire, Persian Empire, Greece, and I'm sure many more in the last 60% of the book are featured. The book was 99 cents. Quite a deal. Recommended for history buffs.
The History of Persia; Is a in depth look at the longest Empire of The Middle East. Persia is as much a frame of mind, as it is a physical place. P.M. Sykes; Takes us on a journey starting in pre-Persian to Persia then post- Persian's Middle-East. Many cultures and civilizations have combined to create what we know as Persia. I think if you choose to take the journey you will be as pleased as I was at its end....D
